Wild Flower Surveys

2009 Survey

The first wild flower survey of the WASP project was carried out on 28 July 2009. Some of the plants photographed on the day are shown below:

Water Mint Common Marsh-bedstraw Perennial Sowthistle Spear Thistle Ragwort Tufted Vetch Lesser Spearwort Wild Angelica Yarrow White Clover

A good variety of wild flowers were identified.  This illustrates the importance of different habitats. The wild flower survey results are listed below. Click on the link to download the 2009 survey pdf.

1966 Survey

The school had a record of a wild flower survey carried out in 1966!  It is a long list of plants names and includes many species not found in 2009.  Some will have disappeared when the school grounds were improved but some may still grow there and could have been overlooked.  Maybe we will find these in 2010.

Our Plant list for 2009 does, however, include many species not on the 1966 list.  Perhaps the Morwenstow infants did not pick the grasses for instance as they are rather plain and only have greenish flowers.  Not all the names on the old list are familiar.  Some of them are old English names which we don’t use now, but a few names such as Snake’s-meat and Ladies watches have never been heard of.
